Belknap case remains in McDonough County, at least for now

The man accused of killing a 5-year-old Macomb girl in 2006 will have to wait to see if his trial will be moved out of McDonough County. A series of motions were heard yesterday in the case against 30-year-old Daniel Belknap of rural Macomb. Belknap is facing facing charges of first degree murder and child endangerment in the death of Silven Yocum, the daughter of his former girlfriend 32-year-old Erin Yocum. On Tuesday, Judge William Henderson said he wants to see if a fair and impartial jury can be picked before ruling on possibly moving the trial to another county. Belknap's attorney, Ron Hanna of Peoria reported that a local public relations firm randomly questioned nearly 270 people with 45 percent saying they knew something about the case. Judge Henderson denied a motion asking that potential jurors fill out a 25-page questionnaire prior to be questioned by attorneys. Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in McDonough County.
