Phil Hare visits
WIU campus to discuss health care
17th District Congressman Phil Hare was on the WIU Macomb
Campus yesterday, joined by Moline residents Bill and Donna
Fair, to discuss the state of health care today. The Fairs
recently lost their son Eric to heart failure, a condition
that manifested in chest pains that Eric, who was uninsured,
was unable to get properly checked and diagnosed. After talking
with the Fairs, Hare decided that their story was only one
example among many of how people in his district, and around
the country are being hurt by the current health care system.
Hare said that even though the current administration has
vetoed previous attempts at universal health care bills, the
country can not afford to wait for a new president... Phil
Hare. Bill Fair said that he believes his son could
have been saved if the doctors could have performed more tests... Bill
Fair. Hare added that many at the house and in
the senate will continue to push for health care reforms ahead
of the November elections, because they have heard the people
they represent echo the words of Donna Fair... Donna
Fair. According to Hare's office, there are currently
1.7 million uninsured Illinoians. |

SRC board of trustees approves resolution of intent to sell
bonds
The Spoon River College’s board of trustees has unanimously
approved a resolution of intent to sell $5.2 million in
bonds to improve the Macomb, Rushville and Havana campuses.
College officials hope the expansions will increase enrollment
at the community college. In Rushville, a 4,600-square-foot
building with geothermal heating and cooling will be built
at 710 Maple Ave. The design includes three classrooms,
a combination open-learning center and computer lab, a distance
learning room, office space, and additional rooms for testing,
study groups and tutoring. The college has a Rushville attendance
center at a leased facility at 229 W. Washington St., but
that center only has one classroom. In Havana, the college
will demolish a building at 324 E. Randolph and build a
5,200-square-foot building with three classrooms, two computer
labs, a distance learning room, office space, a student
lounge and additional rooms for testing and tutoring. Plans
in Macomb are to renovate an 81,000-square-foot building
at 2400-2510 E. Jackson. Only the first phase is included
in the $5.2 million project. A conference center and community
and work force education complex will be built during that
phase. College officials hope to later add 30 classrooms
and labs, a large student lounge and administrative areas.

Illinois lawmakers
working to make school campuses safer
The Illinois State Senate Higher Education Committee has passed
legislation which would create the Campus Security Enhancement
Act of 2008. The bill, sponsored by Senator John Sullivan
of Rushville would assist Illinois colleges and universities
by improving campus security, creating appropriate emergency
responses, and increasing mental health support. Senator Sullivan
says the recent security threats at Western Illinois University
and Quincy University have shown the need for this legislation.
The Senate Bill 2691 now moves to the Senate floor before
it can proceed to the House of Representatives. |
