Myers votes to reject lawmaker
pay raise, "Just does not make sense"
Macomb area State Representative Rich
Myers voted last week to reject a substantial pay increase
for Illinois legislators stating “it just does not
make sense to increase our salaries while we can not even
fund our current programs.” Myers cited the state’s
mounting backlog of unpaid Medicaid bills, unfunded pension
system and a budget hole that may be as high as $750 million
as reasons for rejecting the increase. Myers says the
economy is unstable, people are struggling with record
gas prices, home foreclosures are at their highest levels
in recent memory, and the state is not paying its current
bills. The Compensation Review Board has recommended a
7% pay increase for all General Assembly members and Constitutional
officers. When the Board recommends raises for these offices
they are automatically adopted unless a majority of lawmakers
in both chambers vote to reject the increases.

WIU plans to
treat four groupings of campus trees this summer
Western Illinois University Physical Plant personnel will
treat four groupings of Red and Austrian Pines on the WIU-Macomb
campus during summer break for Diplodia Tip Blight. According
to WIU Campus Planner II Tara Beal, this blight, which is
a fungal disease that affects all species of pine, spreads
quickly and easily among neighboring trees and causes decline
and eventual death. Affected campus trees are located in four
main groups: south of the Heating Plant; north entrance to
Hanson Football Stadium; Stipes Hall/Malpass Library service
drive; and north of Lot 17, between Knoblauch Hall/Malpass
Library. Four Red Pines south of the Heating Plant (along
Sherman Drive) are scheduled to be removed this summer. |
